LH GIRL SABRINA STERK

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” -Thomas Merton

Meet Sabrina… An art school babe/model and local byron gal with an eye for all things creative. We sat down with Sab to chat about all things art, her inspirations and her current projects.

Q1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.

My name is Sabrina and I’m an artist based in Byron Bay. I’ve got a little studio, tucked away in the Byron Industrial State, where I spend my evenings painting, moulding, shaping and spraying. I work mostly with installation pieces, which can vary from 3d conceptual pieces, to commission works like shop-front set ups and wall hangings. To sustain myself financially I work with other businesses, helping to create visual content for them that advertises their products, or beautifies their store/work space.

Q2. What are you currently working on?

At the moment I’m painting a Kandinsky inspired piece. I often work with oil paints but I’ve chosen to use acrylics for this piece. During the day I work on commission pieces and at night and on weekends I spend time completing my personal work. I’m also in the process of developing some pieces for an art show I’ll be having sometime in June. I’ll be sure to let Liberated Heart know when the opening show is on! I’ve attached some images of a painting in progress below….

Q3. How did you fall into the art world?

Lucky for me, I was brought up in a very creative family. My father comes from a family of seven other children, each of which are artists in some field or another. A lot of them are quite successful and have moved overseas to pursue their careers. When I was growing up I spent much of my childhood years at my fathers loft, in the city of Adelaide. To entertain me, he would sit me down with a stack of paper, some pens, paints and crayons, and leave me to play on my own for hours. Since I can remember I’ve been creating – making sculptures with plaster, painting doors, painting paper and drawing all over anything and everything I could get my hands on. I’ve simply followed my passion, which is why I continue to make art (and attempt to also make a living from it).

Q4. What and who inspires you?

Through my studies, I’ve become very inspired by certain art collectives such as; the Bauhaus, The Constructivists, Futurists and Flux movement. Particular artists that I am currently enamored by include; Wassily Kandinsky, Bruno Munari, Alexander Calder, Fausto Melotti, Salvator fiume, Maholy Nagy, Jeans Arp and Claus Oldenberg. Aside from these heroes, I’m constantly seeking inspiration from nature around me and pop culture.
